Riot follows mosque victims' funeral
KARACHI, Pakistan (CNN) -- The rage of mourners over the deaths of nine people killed in an attack on a Shiite Muslim mosque has boiled to the surface. Angry crowds burned a bank to the ground, hurled rocks through the windows of two fast-food restaurants and damaged more than a dozen cars on Sunday. The crowds had been participating in funeral processions for the victims who died at the Shiite Mehdi Mosque on Saturday. Seven other people were wounded in the attack at the mosque. Most of the victims were watching a cricket match near the mosque; the rest were among about 25 worshippers inside, police added. No one has claimed responsibility for the incident, which occurred about 6:15 p.m. (8:15 a.m. ET). (Story) A Kentucky Fried Chicken and a McDonald's were damaged in Sunday's violence, officials said.
Authorities also linked violence that broke out late Saturday to the shootings. On Saturday, Shiite Muslims burned a truck, smashed restaurant windows and threw objects at a provincial official. After the shooting, Sindh Province Chief Minister Ali Mohammad Mehar visited the wounded inside a hospital, where he was pelted with shoes and other objects before he slipped out of the building. While Pakistan has been hit by a rash of attacks against Westeners and Catholics over the past year, this latest raid signals a return to regional religious violence.
